Slowing down out of work

A good way of reducing long term stress is to take up an unrushable sport or hobby in your own time. If you spend all your working day competing or stressed, then it can be pleasant to be completely non-competitive for some of your non-work time.

It can be very relaxing to take up slow physical activities such as sailing or walking where there is little or no pressure for performance.

Similarly you can reduce long-term stress by making a routine period of time for yourself every day for undirected activities such as:

  • reading a novel
  • watching television or listening to music
  • making love
  • meditating
  • having a long bath
  • having a massage
  • etc.
