It is not necessary for interpreters or translators to have formal training and qualifications. However formal training provides a distinct advantage and is much sought after. To teach a language however, it is necessary to have been formally trained in the language.
Institutions
There now exist a large number of institutions, which offer courses in both foreign and Indian languages. The duration of the courses varies from one to five years.
Eligibility
No specific qualifications are required for candidates who want to pursue the language courses offered by cultural centers attached to embassies, such as the Alliance Francaise the Max Mueller Bhavan etc. School children are also eligible to take up the course. However for candidates who want to do a graduation or post-graduation, a minimum requirement of having completed the school-leaving exam is essential.
Selection
Some institutions such as the Jawaharlal Nehru University conduct entrance examinations for their BA, MA and M.Phil courses in various languages, which test the candidate's communication skills.
