ENTRY

To enter any one of the fields of performing arts, what is vitally important is some amount of inborn talent. A person with talent should then go in for formal training. In most cases talent is recognized at a very young age and much of the talent is nurtured in school through the years. Those who are exceptionally good go on to obtain guidance and training from professionals in the field. Training in these fields is now provided by a large number of schools and institutions.

TRAINING

DANCE 

Certain colleges and institutions offer recognized courses/training in dancing. It is also offered as a subject at the school and college level. Private academies and institutions run by leading dancers also hold classes and training in dancing. The Kathak Kendra in Delhi offers a five-year foundation
course and also a three-year diploma course in Kathak. 

Post diploma and refresher courses are also offered. The Kalakshetra in Madras offers a four-year diploma in Bharatnatyam. Institutions such as the Gandharava Mahavidyalaya and the Bharatiya Kala Kendra offer courses in Bharatnatyam, Odissi and Kathak. A large number of kendras such as the Sriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra and the Kathak Kendra offer a three-year diploma course in dance. 

MUSIC 

Persons interested in music can gain formal training in this field. Training is imparted by many schools, institutions and even some dedicated musicians have been training interested persons who wish to pursue this art. Examinations for these courses are conducted at the certificate, degree and the diploma level. Kalakshetra in Madras offers a five-year diploma in music. The Bharatiya Kala Kendra in Delhi offers a three-year diploma and a two-year post-graduate diploma in music. 

DRAMA 

For those who are interested in dramatics, training is imparted by some of the drama companies. But the institutions, which offer professional courses in drama, provide a firm foundation for success in the field. Examinations are conducted at various levels (diploma, graduate, post-graduate) by leading institutions, colleges and universities. 

The National School of Drama offers a three-year diploma course in acting and play design. Candidates should be graduates in any discipline and should have acted in plays at the school or college level. The diploma is equivalent to an MA and those who wish to do a PhD can do so after having completed the diploma.
