All salary grades for officers of the railways are fixed by the Government of India and follow the pattern of the other civil services.

All these posts carry pensionary benefits in addition to other facilities such as health care educational facilities for the children of the employees and travel. The railways run their own hospitals, dispensaries and health care units. The railways also permit six sets of free railway passes for its officers.
