Prospects
Presently, there is very little availability of skilled manpower for the designing, construction and management of semi-intensive fish farms and hatcheries. Therefore, the scope for employment in this field is immense.
Several research projects have been taken up by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, CFTRI, the Department of Biotechnology and other institutions, in order to improve the variety and production of fish, which will provide ample job opportunities in this field, especially in the area of self-employment.
The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) has set up a network of offices in all the maritime states in order to extend expert advice and financial assistance in the form of subsidies, to entrepreneurs. Most nationalized and scheduled banks state cooperatives and agriculture development banks promote shrimp farming by giving credit, which is normally refinanced by NABARD.
Assistance from other financial organizations is also available to integrated export-oriented shrimp farming units. Insurance cover is available for all kinds of risks in shrimp farming. Employment opportunities for aqua culturists also exist in various private companies and export organizations.
There is also tremendous scope for research in the field of aquaculture. From a research background, there is also scope for diverting to teaching in the universities. A Master's or a Ph.D. degree is essential for a teaching career.
