Career
Prospects
A qualified person can be employed as supervisor, farm manager or estate manager at a horticultural farm or estate. In government organizations, the department of horticulture appoints horticulture officers, horticulture assistants, directors, deputy directors, etc.
Various avenues for self employment as a horticulturist are open-setting up one's own farm for growing fruits, vegetables or flowers, or ornamental plants; running nurseries or being employed in an advisory capacity with an organization that handles horticultural activities.
One could also take up a managerial position with private organizations involved in the processing and marketing of fruits, vegetables or flowers.
FUTURE PROSPECTS
In India, fruits and vegetables grow well due to suitable soil and climatic conditions. This has increased export potential. Moreover, the growing demand for fruits and vegetables has also brought about a revolution in the handling of these perishables. It is now possible to extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables through various forms of preservation and processing.
Therefore, there are varied opportunities for those with necessary qualifications for salaried jobs as well as entrepreneurship. There are also increasing research openings, particularly in the area of genetic engineering, for creating better and hardier strains of horticultural produce.
