Remuneration

The Merchant Navy officer’s very high remuneration to and salaries rise tremendously on promotions. The minimum salary for graduates from TS Chanakya or MERI is in the range of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per month. In foreign ships, the salaries vary in the range of $600 to $6000 per month.

However, the salaries differ from company to company and the upper limit for Captains is in the range of Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000 per month.

Merchant ships travel long distances over the seas and during these voyages, the officers are totally cut off from their families. This can lead to monotony. Moreover, a lot of mental and physical stamina is required to withstand the rough and tumble of the sea.

After long voyages, officers are given long leave to spend time with their families. Moreover, senior officers are allowed to occasionally take their families on board. Above all, the Merchant Navy allows for a lot of adventure, apart from the opportunity to visit new places and experience a variety of cultures.
