Overview
Packaging is an important tool for the marketing of a variety of products for purposes of sale in the domestic market as well as for export. Over the years, the concept of packaging has been redefined from being mere containers of a product to a more sophisticated package incorporating sales appeal, aesthetics, convenience and long term protection.
An increasing demand for quality packaging has resulted in a boom in the industry. Domestic
corporates, following the path of multinationals in laying stress on international standards in packaging, are giving a further boost to the demand for packaging material, machinery and systems. Packaging is, therefore, now recognized as a technology.
The increasing demand for packaging has also resulted in the development of newer materials; specialty packages and more sophisticated packaging machinery. There has been a spillover effect on the printing and labeling industry, which has also stepped up operations.
The variety of packaging material ranges from the traditional wood, paper, tinplate and glass to all kinds of paper boards, plastic and flexible packaging, rigid plastic packaging, use of laminates and polyvinyl chlorides, thermocole and so on. From these packaging materials; specialty packages are produced.
Due to greater awareness of environment-friendly packaging, biodegradable materials are also coming up in a big way.
