The Work

An architect's job is to design and plan for the construction of any building or area, within the framework of existing laws and regulations. This involves a variety of tasks at work, and inputs in design and- technology, that range from environmental and special needs for diverse functions in different situations to ecological issues of a broader nature, both in urban and rural contexts.

Architects in India have to work in diverse social, economic, cultural and technological conditions-each of which demand appropriate skills, understanding and knowledge, as well as a deep sense of commitment.

As team leader and co-coordinator, the architect directs, co-relates and integrates activities, not only in the areas of design and execution, but also in others, like survey, soil; testing, engineering, safety, demonstration and supervision. Professionals need a sufficient grasp of all aspects of building technology to be able to design for various needs under different conditions and to direct and co-ordinate the participation of all the specialists involved in the building process.

Constant interaction with people at different levels makes good communication skills necessary. The job also involves a considerable amount of field research and supervision, often outdoors under all kinds of weather conditions.
