ALLOWANCES
Besides their basic remuneration, all services provide their officers with certain allowances and facilities, commensurate with their job. In general, these include housing, telephones and official vehicles. All officers and their families are also covered under medical and other entitlements including the leave travel concession scheme, in accordance with government regulations. Other benefits can vary with the service-for instance, the IPS provides its officers with batmen and jeeps; while railway personnel and their families are given free rail travel in addition to other facilities, such as good housing, hospitals and clubs.
PROMOTION
Promotion in the civil services depends upon positions falling vacant due to the promotion, retirement, resignation, death or dismissal of the immediate senior. All services give competent officers a chance to be promoted to senior positions over the years. The number of years generally spent at each level is:
· Junior Officer Scale: two-year probationary period, working in allotted state.
· Senior Scale Officer: nine years as Under Secretary, working in the state.
· Junior Administrative Grade: eleven years as Deputy Secretary.
