Future Projections

Seventh Plan estimates place the requirement for new public libraries at 5,22,850. At present, most libraries are located in the larger cities and towns of India. Their spread, according to the plan, is likely to expand-from a National Central Library to one in every village. The minimum professional staff required to manage this network is approximately 5,73,500 people at various levels of qualification and positions.

The actual number is likely to be much higher by the year 2000 A.D: spurred on by efforts towards universal education and the information revolution that is affecting all walks of Indian life. This makes the future appear very promising for those considering librarianship as their chosen profession.
