Government of India scales are higher than those of the University Grants Commission. In terms of grades- Assistant Librarians are of equal position to lecturers; Deputy Librarians to Readers; and the Librarian's position is equivalent to that of a Professor's. Emoluments of library personnel at foreign information centers and commercial organizations are, of course, more substantial.
PROMOTION
Policies regarding promotion vary with institutions. As per UGC rules, Library Assistants are promoted three times during their career span. In academic libraries-assistants require eight years of experience before they are able to move up to a Senior Library Assistant's post. This is reduced to five years if a PhD in library science is obtained in the interim. It takes thirteen years of service with research experience, otherwise sixteen years, to become Chief Librarian. Movement in private and commercial libraries can be quicker.
