Are responsible for the safe running of all engines, boilers, refrigerating and sanitary equipment, deck machinery and steam connections of marine ships, and the maintenance, repair and construction of all marine machinery. This also includes the supervision of engine crew involved in
operating the machines, and checking for smooth functioning of all steam engines, electric motors, propulsive engines, etc.
Necessary Qualifications
One needs to have completed four years of training from DMET (Directorate of Marine Engineering Training) Calcutta, to become a marine engineer.
Academic Programme
At DMET, candidates are given knowledge of fairly high standards in fundamental engineering sciences, specialized knowledge of theoretical and practical marine engineering, and also a basic knowledge of social sciences and humanities.
Apart from modern marine technology, the use of basic hand tools, workshop technology, and practical training in the powerhouse-how to operate, overhaul and test auxiliary power plant units-is also imparted.
Job Opportunities
Marine engineers find jobs as Junior Engineer Officers on merchant navy ships, belonging to private and public sector shipping companies. They can also take up employment in different foreign and Indian shipping companies, and with the port and harbor departments.
