Areas of Work

INDUSTRY

The manufacture of jewellery is the largest area, and requires trained personnel. The work in the industry involves the casting and molding of jewellery, and the identification and testing of jewellery and gemstones. Gemstones are ground and polished, and jewellery is engraved. Certain industrial units also use gemstones for industrial purposes.

JEWELLERY HOUSES

These deal primarily with marketing and export of jewellery. However, most of the major jewellery houses have their own factories, where jewellery is fashioned according to the demands of the clients. Here, jewellery designers are employed for designing the jewellery.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH

There are various institutions in the country offering courses in gemology and jewellery designing, where there is scope for the employment of teachers and researchers. Many of the renowned export houses have facilities for research, and these companies often earmark adequate budgets for research and development in the fields of gemology and jewellery designing.
