Areas
of Work
Apart from daily weather forecasts and research on the climate, meteorologists perform several others important functions including
forecasting services for:
THE GENERAL PUBLIC
These services are made available to people through the mass media, including newspapers, radio
and television as also through daily reports published by the meteorological centers.
AVIATION
The important airports have meteorological offices, where meteorologists provide information about the actual and expected weather conditions for the successful planning and execution of all flights. The Aviation Meteorological Offices also keep a constant watch on the weather developments.
AGRICULTURE
In this field, weather forecasts are provided for farmers through weather bulletins, crop yield forecasts and agrometeorological advisories.
FISHERIES AND MARINE LIFE
Meteorological forecasts are also beneficial in this sector. Regular forecasting services are made available to fishermen, and ships are duly informed about weather conditions, and warned against cyclones.
INDUSTRY
Forecasting services are also provided to the industries, where meteorologists work on such problems as smokes control and air pollution.
WATER MANAGEMENT
Forecasting services are provided in this sector by the meteorological centers.
CYCLONE WARNING SERVICES
These are provided in the coastal areas by the India Meteorological Department.
CLIMATOLOGICAL SERVICES
They are provided in various sectors including industry, agriculture, water management, and solar energy.
HYDROMETROLOGICAL SERVICES
The provision of these is another important area where the Indian Meteorological Department
(IMD) plays an important role.
AGROMETROLOGICAL SERVICES
These are provided by the Agricultural Meteorology wing of the
IMD, situated at Pune. Here, agrometeorological advisories are framed for farmers and agricultural institutions, in order to supply the crop data required for research. The IMD also gives inputs for agricultural planning.
RESEARCH
There is scope for research in this area, on subjects ranging from radioactive fallout, to the dynamics of hurricanes. The subjects include: the monsoons, cyclone forecasting, apart from specialized areas such as hydrometeorology,
agrometeorology, marine meteorology, aviation meteorology, mountain meteorology, local storms, air pollution, climate modeling, instrumentation and seismology. This helps in working towards increased knowledge of atmospheric conditions and their affect on our lives.
