The Work

The work undertaken in the plastics industry involves the production of raw materials through compounding of polymers in large reactors, from which the final product is obtained and then converted into molding powder or chips, from which the plastic articles are obtained. These plastic articles are molded through a variety of processing operations including extrusion, compression molding, injection molding, blow molding, stretch blow molding, film blowing, the use of coextruded sheets, calendaring and thermoforming. These products are then sold in the market.

Areas of Specialization

PLASTIC TECHNOLOGISTS

Are responsible for evolving, adopting and supervising various processes for the manufacture of synthetic materials/plastics. They also conduct research in laboratories to determine the chemicals and substances used for and with plastic, such as coal, petroleum, wood, cotton, etc.

Moreover, plastics technologists evolve and adopt various processes for the production of plastics, after which they test the finished products. They are also responsible for supervising and guiding the production processes in factories.

SUPERVISIORS/FOREMEN

Perform the task of supervising various plastic product-manufacturing processes and ensuring proper use of men and materials. They also supervise machine operations of extruding, molding and injecting of materials, besides maintaining records of inputs and outputs.

Supervisors/foremen also study specifications, arrange for materials, tools and equipment, and guide the setting up of machines, tools, moulds, etc. according to the type of article to be manufactured. There are also a number of technical personnel, who handle the operation of different types of machinery. Depending upon the type of machinery handled the occupations are as follows:

Tablet machine operator, laminating press operator, extruding machine setter, extruding machine operator, mould setter, injection molding machine operator, compression molding machine operator, cold molding press operator, bottle blowing machine operator, vacuum plastic forming machine operator, molder, embossing machine setter, printing machine operator, cementer/ assembler, plastics product making operatives, finisher.
