CISF

The CISF was established in 1969 to protect and safeguard the Central industrial undertakings and other installations specified by the government.

THE WORK

The CISF provides security to industrial undertakings in the public sector against theft, pilferage, sabotage, espionage, fire hazards and other such calamities. The CISF is often deployed for internal security duties also. The officers are mainly deployed for purposes of protection of public sector undertakings, as also for the management of industries.

Major Tasks Performed

The primary function of this service is to ensure the security of the particular undertaking against theft, espionage etc. In times of emergencies or riots, the CISF is often deployed for internal security duties.

ADVISORY TASKS

The Inspector-General of the CISF keeps the Central government informed of all matters of importance, and of security requirements in the industries.

SUPERVISORY TASKS

Deputy Inspector-Generals are often appointed in charge of particular zones. They inspect the battalions and industrial undertakings in their zones, and based on this, they send reports to the Inspector- Generals. 

MANAGEMENT

Managers and safety officers have an important function to perform in the industry. Safety officers help prevent industrial hazards.

ENTRY

Direct recruitment in the CISF is open to the rank of Sub-inspectors. Other senior posts are filled either by promotion, or on deputation from other Central government services, including the State Police Forces, the BSF, the CRPF, the RPF and other Defense Services. Often, released army officers are re-employed in the CISF.

Eligibility


Candidates with a Bachelor's degree in arts, science, commerce or law from a recognized university are eligible for the post of Sub-inspectors. Candidates with a qualification at the intermediate level are eligible for the post of Assistant Sub-inspector. In the gazetted officers category, candidates for the position of Assistant Commandant/Vice Principal must have a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university.

For the posts of Sub-inspectors and Assistant Sub-inspectors, a proficiency in sports and athletics, and a membership of the NCC is preferred, and even more so, is distinguished achievement in sports at the national, state or university level.

For admission to the one-year diploma course in industrial safety management, graduation in physics, chemistry, mathematics or any branch of engineering is the minimum qualification.

Training

The training college for CISF personnel is located at Hyderabad. Initial refreshment and promotion courses for the members and senior officers of the force are conducted at this institute.

Basic training for the post of Assistant Commandant is of one year's duration, and for the executive positions of Sub-inspector/Assistant Sub-inspector, is of 48 weeks' duration. The basic training for constables, naiks and head constables, on the other hand, is of 36 weeks' duration.

Patna University offers a postgraduate diploma course in industrial safety Management. It is a recently introduced job-oriented course, offering a challenging career in industrial management.

The entrance test for admission to the PG diploma courses is held in two phases, a written test consisting of three papers (mathematics, physics, chemistry and general knowledge) and a personality test.

Career Structure

The CISF officers are deputed as Assistant Commandants and Assistant Sub-inspectors in the various industrial units. The Chief Security Officers are the heads of the battalions; the Deputy Inspector-Generals are in charge at the zonal level, and the Inspector-General heads the force.
The hierarchy in the CISF is as follows:

1. Inspector-General
2. Deputy Inspector-General
3. Commandant (Chief Security Officer)
4. Assistant Commandant (Security Officer)
5. Company Commandant (Inspector)
6. Platoon Commander (Sub-inspector)
7. Assistant Sub-inspector
8. Head Security Guard
9. Senior Security Guard
10. Security Guard.

Promotions within the CISF usually take place after at least five years of regular service. These promotions are done on the basis of selections made in accordance with the order issued by the Central government.

However, all appointments by direct recruitment or promotion in the CISF are made on probation for two years. Suitable retired/released officers of the rank of Captain or an equivalent rank in the Defense Services are often re-employed in the PG Diploma holders in Industrial Management, from Patna University, have excellent, job prospects in the different factories and industries, in the
public as well as private sector. 

REMUNERATION

The pay scales admissible to the CISF personnel, exclusive of the allowances and perks, are as follows:

RANK PAYSCALE

Constable: Rs 825 - Rs 1200 p.m.
Assistant Sub-inspector: Rs 1320 - Rs 2040 p.m.
Sub-inspector: Rs 1400 - Rs 2300 p.m.
Assistant Commandant: Rs 2200 - Rs 4000 p.m.

A good physique, courage, tact, a cool temperament, good judgment, alertness in observation, loyalty, sincerity, devotion, a strong sense of discipline.

PRESSURES

Long and irregular hours of work, postings in remote areas, and in certain professions, risk to life.
