Career
Prospects
Within the veterinary field itself, there are several career options. After a student graduates as a vet
he/she can opt for a post graduation or Ph.D. in specialized areas like surgery, andrology or medicine, or take up the job of a livestock development officer. Other than these a vet can also join dairy and poultry farms as a doctor or become a marketing officer for a pharmaceutical company.
As managers of animal and poultry farms, veterinarians may also work in the field of primary production of milk meat, egg and other products.
Field veterinarians, on the other hand, cater to the health problems of domestic animals.
Many vets, especially in towns and metros, start their own private practice for treating pets.
As public health professionals, veterinarians may also intercept the spread of zoonotic diseases, including rabies and tuberculosis.
Wildlife and zoo veterinarians promote natural ecology and cater to the health problems of wildlife in zoos, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries:
Army veterinarians can work as officers of the Remount Veterinary corps. Postgraduates in veterinary science can also opt for teaching and research, or work as development personnel in drug, diagnostic and vaccine sectors.
Pressures
Pressures come from dealing with creatures that are unable to communicate. A good vet must read the signs from the animal's behavior and diagnose the ailment. Vets must also be able to handle emergencies and work in physically disagreeable conditions, or in rural areas where working hours may be long and irregular, and working conditions uncomfortable.
