Veterinary
Science and Animal Husbandry
Veterinary science is a medical profession that deals with the control of disease in animals. It also includes the breeding and scientific handling of livestock. Veterinarians can choose to work in urban areas, where the work would mostly include the care and handling of domestic pets, or with the government's animal husbandry departments.
The demand for veterinary doctors has increased tremendously. More and more people are keeping pets, both for companionship and protection, than ever before. There is also a major growth in the demand for animal products.
Many more women, too, are entering this profession today. For a long time, it was assumed that women would be unable to cope with the heavy work demanded of a veterinary doctor, especially the handling of large animals. But in recent years, there has been a perceptible increase in the number of women entering veterinary colleges. However, most women opt for private practice in urban areas, and farmers are still wary of consulting a woman vet.
