There are no set patterns on which a model's career moves
Entry
This is usually through a break with an advertising agency, photographer or fashion designer. Winners of beauty contests, in particular the Miss India contest, are also expected to sign a contract with the sponsoring company as a part of their acceptance of the title and thus have their careers laid out for them. A portfolio of the aspirants in various moods and outfits. is essential.
A good portfolio can cost anything between Rs 3,000 to Rs 7,000 to put together depending on the standing of the photographer hired for the job. This is considered a sound investment, as its quality can make or break a career.
Career Levels
Models usually hit the big-time, remain in public view for limited period of time and then, fade away. A good business sense and a steady mind are required to make the best of the limited period of exposure.
Time spent in exercising around keeping oneself in top physical condition is vital for a longer career. Modeling is a short-lived career-and not a very steady one-5-10 years depending on how serious the model is. A second line of interest or source of income is therefore advisable for all aspirants to this field.
Currently, models are being assessed according to their experience and range of work. Those starting out are graded `C' category, then B' and senior, top-of the-line models `A' category.
