Training
There are at present about 130 homoeopathic colleges spread around the country, 83 of which run degree courses. Of these, ten colleges have obtained permission from the Central Council of Homoeopathy to initiate postgraduate studies in their curriculum. Already, two colleges (at Jaipur and Calicut) offer facilities for MD students.
Eligibility
Conditions of eligibility for application to homeopathic colleges are as follows:
For Graduate Degree/Diploma Course: 10+2 with physics, chemistry, biology.
Candidates seeking admission to graduate courses should have completed seven years as of 31 December of the year of application.
Selection of candidates is based entirely on merit, and the cut-off point for admission is usually over 80%. The training period for homoeopathic studies varies with the course undertaken:
DHMS
Diploma in Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery: four years, including a six-month internship.
BHMS
Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery: five and a half years, including a one-year internship.
BHMS (Graded Degree Course)
Two years, including a six-month internship. The purpose of this course is to enable diploma holders to upgrade their skills to the degree level.
MD (Homoeopathy)
Three years, including a one-year internship.
Academic Programme
Both graduate degree and diploma courses include instruction in theory and practicals, including subjects such as anatomy, physiology, homoeopathic pharmacy, materia medica, social preventive medicine, toxicology, forensic medicine, pathology, microbiology, medicine, surgery, gynecology, obstetrics and repertory. Hands-on training is acquired during internship. Postgraduate MD subjects for specialization are materia medica, homoeopathic philosophy and repertory.
