The practice of this system is confined to a very small part of Tamil Nadu. In many respects, its principles are somewhat akin to ayurveda although its origins are probably much older. Despite these similarities, however, siddha maintains its own distinct identity.
Its reference points are the ancient medical treatises, which are a compendium of valuable information on herbs, drugs, alchemy, disease syndrome and diagnosis, as well as instructions on such therapeutic skills as pressure point massage, known to have seen some success in severe cases of diabetes. Unlike some of the other traditional systems, practitioners of siddha are also equipped
to treat medical emergencies.
Entry
Certification as a practitioner requires a graduate degree in siddha medicine and surgery.
