Eligibility
Candidates having a background in science at the intermediate level are eligible for the B.Tech. programme in biotechnology as well as the integrated M.Tech. programme at IIT Delhi.
Graduates in all sciences/engineering technology/medicine are eligible for the postgraduate (M.Sc.) course in biotechnology.
Selection
Admission to the five-year integrated M.Tech. programme offered by the IITs (Delhi and Kharagpur) is through a Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which is held for students who
have successfully completed the 10+2 or equivalent examination, with physics, chemistry and mathematics. For B.Sc. in biotechnology, which is at present offered at Osmania University, the candidate must have studied science at the plus two levels.
Duration
While the B.Sc. is of three years duration, B.Tech. course is of four years duration, and it takes two years to complete the M.Sc. course. The integrated M.Tech. programme offered at IIT Delhi
is of five years duration, whereas the recently introduced integrated M.Tech. programme at IIT Kharagpur is of five and a half years duration, since the students have the option to leave after four years (after the B.Tech. course).
Academic Programme
The syllabus of the M.Sc. programme in most institutions covers subjects such as micro-biology, biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, physical and chemical properties of biomolecules, RNA & DNA technology, protein engineering, biophysics, immunology, metabolic-regulation, engineering, and plant cell culture, whereas the M.Tech. course lays emphasis also on the technical and engineering subjects.
