The
Work
The work of biotechnologists is basically research oriented, and aims at the application of technology to the improvement of life, and development of a variety of end uses. Biotechnologists are therefore involved in research, production and marketing.
Major Tasks Performed
The major tasks performed in the area of biotechnology are as follows:
PRODUCTION
Biotechnologists are involved in production of the bioprocessed materials, which could include
foods, pharmaceuticals, tissue culture, chemicals, as well as the execution of pollution control measures. Biotechnologists are also involved in determining the options available for the installation and commissioning of industrial plants.
INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
Research organizations in the government and the private sector employ biotechnologists for conducting appropriate research and development studies for application in areas of concern such
as pollution control, waste management, and various chemical processes, for increased productivity.
ACADEMIC RESEARCH
Academic research is technical, conducted more for expanding the horizons of knowledge than for
application in specific areas of work. At academic and research institutes, studies are conducted in areas such as biochemical engineering, microchemistry, genetics, biochemistry and so on. Academic research is conducted not only in academic institutions, but also in some major pharmaceutical and chemical industries.
PLANNING AND MARKETING
Biotechnologists in this area are involved in the installation and commissioning of industrial
plants as well as industrial plans and policies, in determining the allocation of resources for purposes of technological developments, and studies in the marketing of biotechnology products and processes, in industry, in the medical field, and in agriculture.
