Eligibility

Individuals need to have obtained a formal education in the particular field of specialization concerned. 

An architect needs to have a degree/diploma in architecture. A degree/diploma from a recognized institution is necessary to be a town and country planner. 

For civil engineering positions, Bachelor's degree in civil structural engineering is needed. Contractors are generally qualified engineers who develop their skills on the job. 

A surveyor needs to have a certificate in surveying. All skilled trades require requisite training from Industrial Training Institutes or training under the apprenticeship scheme in the concerned field.


Institutions

Educational and training facilities for various positions in the area of construction are available at various levels. The industry needs persons with formal education in the fields of architecture, civil engineering, structural engineering, surveying, and draughtsmanship. 

Degree courses in architecture are available in approximately thirty-one universities and institutions in India. The minimum educational qualification is 10+2 with English, science and math's. In most institutes selection is done through an entrance examination. The duration of the course varies from four to five years. 

Approximately 400 engineering colleges all over India impart education at the degree level in the field of civil engineering. These courses are of four years duration and selection is done on the basis of an entrance examination. The minimum qualification for admission to an engineering degree is 10+2 with physics, chemistry and math's. 

Several courses on construction are offered by the National Institute of Construction Management and Research, Mumbai. These are:

1) Master's in construction management, a postgraduate diploma that aims at developing professional construction managers. 

Admission is open to persons with a graduate degree in any branch of engineering or architecture with 55% marks in aggregate or a postgraduate degree in arts, commerce or science with 55% marks and two years' work experience in the construction industry. 

Admission is done on the basis of a written test and performance at group discussions and interview. The duration of the course is fifteen months and the total number of seats available is forty. Financial aid is provided on the basis of merit in the form of research assistantship.

2) Postgraduate diploma in construction management. This is a correspondence course and is open to graduate engineers/architects/chartered accountants/company secretaries/master's or degree holders in business management, commerce or natural science and engineering diploma holders having at least two years' site experience. The duration of the programme varies from eighteen months to four years. 

There are about 450 polytechnics, both government managed and private, offering diploma courses in various disciplines related to the construction industry. These include courses in architecture, as also draughtsmanship and surveying. Admission to these courses is available to class X students, and the course duration is normally three years. 

A network of 2070 industrial training institutes spread all over the country offer certificate level courses in various trades related to the construction industry. Educational qualification required is class VIII, and the courses vary from one to two years. Trades covered by these courses include welding, plumbing, painting, carpentry, electrical work, civil draughtsmanship and surveying.
