Areas
of Work
The work done in the leather industry is generally divided into three major areas. These include: Design, Manufacture and Marketing.
DESIGNING
In the leather industry involves creating and developing new and up-to-date patterns. This is done keeping in mind the current trends in fashion. In fact, with the growing demand for leather goods, a new system called the computer-aided design system has been introduced by the Indian government in some of the prominent leather and footwear design institutes.
This has led to a boost in the production of a variety of leather goods. Designers do not work in isolation, but as members of team, with fabric designers, production people and marketing specialists. When the design is finalized, it is sent to pattern cutters, who will then turn it into a two-dimensional pattern suitable for mass production.
MANUFACTURE
Involves the production of mass leather items garments, shoes, and accessories, from models or from other samples designed. The Production Manager is in charge of supervising production flow systems and ensuring that the manufacturing process, once it is broken into a number of operations, will run smoothly, without bottlenecks. Therefore production professionals have to be adequately trained to understand and handle all modern state-of the-art equipment effectively.
MARKETING
Involves ensuring the availability of ready buyers for the products in the domestic market, as well as for export, while also creating a market for new designs and products. This is handled by major leather goods and footware production houses, independently, or in association with the media and advertising companies.
