Career
Prospects
Most students, after completing their courses, are employed by large industrial export houses as production executive’s quality controllers or designers. Leather technologists find employment specifically with the footwear, leather garments and leather products industries.
After some years of experience, these professionals can even set up their own manufacturing units. Several institutions provide financial and other infrastructural facilities for these purposes.
A job in the leather industry may seem glamorous, as it is creative and involves fashion garments and exports, but it also requires long hours of hard work and handling of messy raw hides and animal skins. However, the salaries are enough to compensate for the effort.
FUTURE PROSPECTS
The government has earmarked leather goods as a priority sector, providing several schemes for professional training as well as for the development and promotion of leather especially for servicing of the export market, which has been growing at an average of 25% every year.
The prospects for both, entrepreneurship as well as self-employment, are therefore very bright. Leather garments are definitely categorized in the range of hi-fashion apparel and with their demand increasing, a boom has been predicted for this industry.
