Psychiatrists can seek employment in regular hospitals as well as in mental hospitals. They are also free to set up their own private clinics. They can work as counselors in large-scale industries and in drug de-addiction centers apart from teaching in medical colleges and psychiatric institutions.
PRESSURES
Treatment of manic-depressive and suicidal patients can lead to a lot of frustration. Unlike in physical illness treatment of mental illness is based on hypotheses without clinical confirmation, and may not be sufficient to effect a cure.
FUTURE PROSPECTS
Psychiatry, as a medical profession, is gradually gaining a lot of importance. With increasing mental tension and stress associated with modern urban lifestyles, the need for psychiatrists is rapidly increasing. The attitudes of lay people towards psychiatry and psychotherapy have also changed, and prejudices are gradually vanishing. Thus, psychiatry as a profession, is gaining an important stature, and is now acknowledged as an important branch along with the other medical professions.
