STATE BANK OF INDIA AND ASSOCIATE BANKS AND
NATIONALISED BANKS:
On completion of probation, officers move through the following grades:
Scale I: For a period approximating six years. In this time, an officer is required to put in two years of service in a rural posting, and in addition, spend one year as an accountant or field officer at any of the bank's branches. Scale I officers must undergo a test and interview before being moved up to the next grade.
Scale II: Takes two years, one year of which is as a manager at a rural or semi-urban branch. Promotion at the end of this period depends on the officer's performance in an interview.
Scale III to Scale VI: Movement through these grades takes an average of eight years, of which two years are served as Branch Manager. Promotion to Scale VI depends on the number of vacancies available, and is decided on the basis of an interview.
Scale VII: Is at the level of General Manager.
Scale VIII: Is the post of Managing Director and is a government appointment.
Scale IX: Is also a special appointment for the post of Chairman.
RESERVE BANK OF INDIA AND REGIONAL RESERVE BANKS:
Movement upward and levels of seniority are similar to those in the State Bank of India and nationalized banks, except that officers here start at grade A or B and rise to grade F, before being appointed to the executive cadre.
PRIVATE SECTOR BANKS:
The hierarchy in the private sector banks are similar to that followed in public sector banks.
FOREIGN BANKS:
There is no well-defined hierarchy in the foreign banks. The hierarchy and designations vary from one bank to another.
