Air
Worthiness Officer
Checks the airworthiness of an aircraft. Qualifications for entry include a Bachelor's degree with mathematics or physics as a main subject and three years experience in aircraft maintenance or a degree in mechanical/electrical/ electronic engineering with one year's experience in airframe, aircraft structure systems or engines/power plants/avionics in a reputed manufacturing/ overhauling/maintenance establishment, or a degree in aeronautical engineering or equivalent. The upper age limit is thirty years.
The selection is made through the UPSC advertisement. After some years of experience there could be promotions to the post of Senior Air Worthiness Officer, and further to that of Deputy Director, and Director.
Aircraft
Engineer
Is required to maintain aircraft, their engines and air equipment, and ensure their safety and efficient operation. An engineering degree with a specialization in aeronautical, mechanical or electrical engineering is a requirement for entry.
Air
Traffic Controllers
Work in teams to maintain the movements of aircraft taking off, landing and when en route in the designated controlled airspace of the Air Traffic Controller.
Entry is usually through a written examination, interviews and medical fitness test. The minimum requirement is a degree in radio engineering or electronics.
Air Traffic Controllers have to undergo a rigorous
training programme at the Civil Aviation Training Center at Allahabad, which includes several weeks on a simulator. The next four months are spent under supervision at an international airport, followed by another semester at Allahabad, after which there is an appraisal by a rating board before being appointed as a confirmed rated officer in any one of the four sections of the air traffic control tower which is responsible for all aircraft in the vicinity; radar, or approach control; for aircraft control of aircraft upto a certain specified limit outside radar control and for flight information region.
According to available vacancies and seniority, an Air Traffic Controller may be promoted to the post of Senior Aerodrome Officer, followed by Deputy Director and Director. There are critical demands made in this job, and it is therefore necessary to be capable of total concentration, and to have quick responses to be able to take split second decisions. A proficiency in calculations is an added advantage.
Aerodrome
Officer
Is responsible for the operation of the radio communication equipment between the aerodrome and the air traffic control. This involves signaling aircraft and displaying ground markings. Those with a graduate degree in science with physics or math's are eligible for entry. Age requirement is 18-25 years. Candidates have to go through a process of selection. Those who qualify are given fourteen weeks training at the Civil Aviation Center at Allahabad.
Communication
Officer
Is responsible for routine maintenance, repair and adjustment of communication equipment at the airports. A Bachelor's degree with physics, or a diploma in radio/ electronics/ telecommunications/
electrical/or communication engineering is a basic requirement. Acquaintance with typing and the Morse code is an asset. Age specification-18-25 years.
Aircraft
Technician
Fits and assembles components of aircraft frames, propellers, engines and so on, and is also responsible for the movement of aircraft and equipment into the workshop. Requirement for entry is an engineering degree with two years' experience, or a diploma in mechanical/electrical or electronics engineering with three years experience or more years of experience in lieu of a technical qualification. The upper age limit for this position is thirty years. Selection is made through an aptitude test followed by an interview.
Airport
Manager
This is an administrative function dealing with various activities at an airport. Non-flying pilots or those with experience in air traffic control can be selected for this post. Eligibility requirements include a degree from a recognized university with five years experience in air traffic control, or a commercial pilot's license, or a post-graduate degree/diploma in business administration with two years experience in air traffic control. The age limit is thirty-five years.
Air
Traffic Officer
Is responsible for planning, organizing and monitoring the improvement of meals and the provisioning of cabin and catering items for supply and presentation on flights. At a junior level this also includes escorting passengers to and from the aircraft, and loading and unloading cargo and luggage from aircraft. This position is for a graduate with experience in an approved travel agency or airline. A diploma or certificate in travel and tourism, knowledge of a foreign language and typing are assets.
Manager(Personnel/Legal/Commercial/Cargo/Economic
Planning/Housekeeping/Stores/ Purchase)
These are essentially administrative positions as in any commercial enterprise. Qualifications for these jobs require a basic degree in the discipline of relevance to the function, and experience.
Commercial
Those with a post-graduate degree or two-year diploma in business management with a specialization in sales/marketing management are eligible. Personnel: Postgraduate degree or two-year diploma in personnel management/industrial relations/labor relations, or MBA with specializations in the above disciplines is necessary.
Stores
Post-graduate degree or diploma in business management with specializations in materials management. Selected candidates are taken on as management trainees, and put through a further period of in-house training before being absorbed in the relevant department.
Ticketing
and reservation Personnel
Is the public interface of the organization with prospective passengers. This is a job, which involves handling passengers, their flight requirements and tickets for travel. Responsibilities
therefore include a certain amount of public relations and sales promotion. Most airline companies prefer to take on women in these positions.
A degree in any discipline or a diploma in travel and tourism is a basic requirement. Knowledge of a foreign language and computer literacy are assets. Selections are made after personal interviews. International airlines generally train their fresh recruits in their countries. The training is usually for six months during which a stipend is paid.
Meteorologist
Requires a M.Sc. or B.Sc. in meteorology/ physics/ mathematics/ computer applications/ electronics/ telecommunications from a recognized university. Professionals in the meteorological department would be employed as climatologists who compile and interpret data on temperature, sunlight, rainfall, humidity, wind, etc. or aerologists who study the phenomenon of `upper air' for use of pilots flying aircraft at high altitudes; or as a meteorologist responsible for checking and maintaining instruments and equipments.
Similarly there are several posts in the various operational and administrative departments of the civil aviation organizations. These include areas such as fire services, stores and purchase, medical, housekeeping, finance and accounts, civil and electrical engineering, personnel, architectural planning, statistical, legal and vigilance.
Recruitment qualifications in most cases include a degree or diploma in the field of specialization, and/or experience. Entry is at the level of Supervisor or Junior Officer, followed by promotions to the posts of Assistant Officer and Officer in the respective department.
