Main Sectors

Aviation in India is under the control of the Government and so a major segment of jobs in this sector fall under public sector organization. However, with the opening of the skies to private airlines, and the extension of landing rights to international airlines, the private sector has recently witnessed a major spurt in employment opportunities. The aviation sector can be divided into:

Public Sector

Which consists of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the apex body under the Ministry of Civil Aviation which controls and monitors the airports and facilities for the operation of aircraft; the International Airports Authority of India (IAAI), responsible for the construction and maintenance of five international airports in the country; the National Airports Authority of India (NAAI), responsible for all the other national aerodromes and their flying facilities; and the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) which provides meteorological services for aircraft flight control.

In addition there are the public sector airlines-Indian Airlines, the national domestic air carrier; the helicopter corporation PawanHans, the domestic carrier Vayudoot and the international carrier, Air India.

Private Sector

Has made its appearance felt only in the last few years. There are a number of private airlines now operating in the country, and although the number of aircraft and consequently, the number of personnel employed is still low, it is this sector, which will see a major expansion in jobs in the near future.

International Airports Authority of India (IAAI)

The IAAI takes care of security and fire prevention systems at the five international airports. It is also in charge of the actual construction of these buildings and their maintenance. Besides security officers, fire-fighting personnel and architects, the IAAI employs executive professionals in various capacities such as Vigilance Officer, Personnel Manager, Manager (Cargo), etc. As the IAAI does not own any aircraft, positions are available only for work on the ground.

National Airports Authority of India (NAAI)

The NAAI manages domestic aerodromes and civil enclaves at defense aerodromes. The planning, construction and maintenance of all airports, together with providing communication and security systems is the NAAI's responsibility. It also provides air traffic control services.
