Eligibility
Science graduates are usually recruited for officer-level appointments, whereas those with a matriculate qualification are taken in as Naviks in the general duty branch, and candidates who have passed the VIII standard examination are recruited as Naviks in the domestic branch. Candidates having a diploma in engineering are taken in as Yantriks.
Eligibility
GENERAL DUTY BRANCH
Candidates having a Bachelor's degree with mathematics and physics as subject's upto the intermediate level, and having passed the second mate's examination prescribed by the Ministry of Transport, are recruited as Assistant Commandants in the general duty branch. Men in the age group of 21 to 25 years are recruited for this post.
PILOT/NAVIGATOR BRANCH
Candidates who have passed the intermediate examination and possess a current commercial
pilot's license on the date of commencement of training or those candidates who have a B.Sc. degree with mathematics and physics as subjects are recruited as Assistant Commandants in the pilot/navigator branch. The age limit for recruiting these candidates is 19 to 27 years.
TECHNICAL BRANCH
Candidates having a degree in naval architecture/mechanical/marine electrical/telecommunication/
electronics/design/production/aeronautical control engineering, or an equivalent qualification in any of the above disciplines recognized by the Institute of Engineers (India), are eligible.
Marine engineering graduates of IMET, Calcutta, or those having the Government of India, Ministry of Surface Transport Certificate of Competency as 1st class engineers of Motorship or any similar certificate recognized by the government of India are recruited as Assistant Commandants in the technical branch. The age limit for the recruitment of these candidates is 21 to 30 years.
Besides, candidates who have cleared the matric examination are eligible for recruitment as Naviks in the general duty branch. Candidates who have studied upto the VIIIth standard are eligible for being recruited as Naviks in the domestic branch. Naviks are generally recruited in the age group of 17-22 years whereas candidates having a diploma in mechanical/electrical/electronics/aeronautical
engineering, after the matric level, are recruited as Yantriks.
They are generally recruited at the age of 22. Furthermore, the physical eligibility standards in the non-gazetted as well as gazetted officers, cadre include a minimum height of 157 cms and a minimum weight of 45 kg. Eyesight has to be in the range of 6/6 and 6/36, in both eyes.
Recruitment
Recruitment of officers and sailors in the coast guard is done in Allahabad, Ambala, Delhi, Lucknow and Varanasi in the northern region; in Bangalore, Chilka, Coimbatore, Madras,
Mandapam and Vishakhapatnam, in the southern region; in Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Mumbai and Kochi in the western region; in Calcutta, Haldia and Patna, in the eastern region; and in Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Training
The coast guard personnel are imparted initial training at the naval training establishments. Notable among these are the training establishments in Madras, Goa, Mumbai, Kochi, and Daman and Diu. Often, the officers and Naviks are also sent to Singapore, Japan and the USA for higher training. Search and rescue as well as pollution control courses are offered to coast guard officers in the USA.
Defense management computer programming and various other courses are also offered to officers at Defense Services Staff College and other such institutions in India.
