Remuneration
Sailors (Naviks) get a starting salary of Rs 1,000 per month, excluding DA and other allowances. Yantriks, who are more qualified than the Naviks, are offered an initial salary of Rs 1,800 per month, excluding DA and other perks.
For Gazetted officers in the coast guard, the remuneration is as follows:
Assistant Commandant Rs 2,200 - Rs 2,800 per month
Deputy Commandant Rs 3,000 - Rs 4,500 per month
Commandant Rs 4,100 - Rs 5,300 per month
Dy Inspector General Rs 5,100 - Rs 6,150 per month
Inspector General Rs 5,900 - Rs 6,700 per month
Various other privileges and additional facilities are also offered to coast guard employees. These include, not only facilities for further studies abroad, but also leave benefits and travel concessions, furnished accommodation facilities according to rank and marital status, free medical and dental care facilities, and free food on board.
Moreover, coast guard officers are covered under group insurance schemes, and are provided with government loans for purchase of house, land and vehicles, apart from death-cum-retirement gratuity, pension and reward money.
PRESSURES
The work may involve long journeys on the seas, apart from the risk to life during wartime. Coast guard officers are very often positioned in remote coastal areas, away from their families.
