The work of the coast guard is to ensure the protection and security of the maritime zones of India, its offshore rigs and installations. The main function is that of defending the sea borders from enemy forces and the prevention of the misuse of Indian waters by smugglers and other such elements.

PROTECTION OF THE MARITIME ZONES OF INDIA
The main function of the coast guard is to protect the maritime interests of the country, ensuring the safety and protection of offshore terminals, installations and other structures and devices in the maritime zones.
PROTECTION TO FISHERMAN
An important duty of the coast guard is to provide protection to fishermen and their families as well as to assist them at sea when in distress. It also provides measures for the safety of life and property on the seas.
POLLUTION CONTROL
The coast guard takes up various measures for the preservation and protection of the maritime environment, and for the prevention and control of pollution in the marine environment and ecology.
ANTI SMUGGLING ACTIVITIES
The coast guard also plays an important role in assisting Customs and other authorities in their anti-smuggling operations. They are also responsible for enforcing the provisions of the legislations enacted for application in the maritime zones. The coast guard is, therefore, an important policing force at sea.
